letter from the editor
hard times mean faster marketing and what happened to the "misfit?"

She started some small talk and I happened to mention how the day had gone by so quickly. She then turned to me and with her little West Virginia twang said, “Hun, the days and years melt away faster and faster the older you git.” Ugh! :) I know she’s right. It sure does feel like that some days more than others; time just goes by way, way too fast. And something else that’s going by just as quickly: the pace of marketing business (continued)

Facebook Era author Clara Shih.
The Facebook Era by Clara ShihThe next day after my presentation in Boston, I had the pleasure of listening to Clara Shih, author of the new book, The Facebook Era, present on the topic of — well, what else but the new Facebook era that we find ourselves in.

Her informative presentation covered some fundamentals regarding the rapid adoption of social networking as a means of communication.

This blog post details some of Clara’s key highlights and insightful commentary

remember this CEO? well, he's been *fixed* :)Remember several months back I had shared a story about a CEO who was "threatening" to go back to web 1.0 ways? Many of you have, since then, asked me about this CEO and I am beyond happy to report that after several months, discussions and strategic marketing planning, the CEO caved and has given the green light for a slew of new, fun marketing programs, campaigns and initiatives.

telling the stories of small businesses in their own words
small business celebs blog by digital marketer mayra ruizThis is a new blog which I launched recently to highlight small business stories from the trenches as well as small snippets of info and news relevant to anyone marketing a small business. It just so happens, though, that the idea for this blog had come to me over a year ago but only now was I able to launch it. Additionally, through a new partnership with web services leader Network Solutions, my stories of small biz success and strife are also being featured on the growsmartbusiness.com blog as well.

personal ramblings
i took amanda to work for *take your child to work day* and made her blog about it :)
personal ramblings: i took amanda to work for *take your child to work day* and made her blog about it! Well, I didn't "make her blog" in a mean way; she had to turn in an assignment the next day and so I thought a blog post about her experience would be a great way to document her thoughts and share her experience with many beyond her classroom teacher and fellow students. Clearly, I am so biased when it comes to this girl because hey, what can I say, I'm a proud mama!!! I'm pleased to share with you Amanda's debut blog effort. Check it out for a fun and innocently refreshing read!

Small companies more optimistic on marketing

Small b-to-b companies have a brighter outlook on marketing spending than larger b-to-b companies, according to a recent study by Outsell, an analyst firm.

Twenty-six percent of small companies surveyed said they planned to increase marketing spending this year, while only 13% of large companies plan to increase their marketing spending. Overall, small businesses plan to cut marketing budgets by 0.4%; large companies plan to cut total marketing spending by 9.7%.

Small companies said their online spending will rise an average of 8.2%, while large companies will only increase online budgets by 0.4%.

For Outsell’s study, small companies are defined as having 100 or fewer employees; large companies, as having more than 1,000 employees.
